Community Arts Network (CAN) held an open meeting on Saturday 18 February at 2pm at their premises in Rope Walk, Bideford to discuss proposals for a new community radio station run by young people in North Devon.

The project aims to give youngsters aged from 8-25 a voice over the airwaves by setting up a community radio station for and run by children and young people.

CAN are now recruiting young people to be part to be the driving force behind the new venture. Anyone under the age of 20 (25 if you have a disability or special education need) can get involved and be part of the organising committee. Group meetings will be held via Skype minimising travel and opening this up to all regardless of your location. They will also be looking for budding radio presenters and those that are more interested in the technical aspects of radio and sound.

This will be a unique community radio station led by and for children and young people. The new station will aim to have a programme of topics relevant to each age group and have guests speakers from statutory and community groups answering questions and giving advice. The station will not broadcast chart music but instead will link with CAN's VH Live project to bring the best original music from local bands, musicians and singers. The station will also be supporting all other performing arts through radio plays, comedians and any talent that can be broadcast for radio.

The project already has support from The Voice North Devon, Asda Bideford and Westcountry Broadcast.

This is a real opportunity to have a voice and contribute to the local community and learn new skills.

If you are interested in getting involved in any aspect of community radio from DJ to technical support you will receive full training.  For more information visit  http://www.canplay.co.uk/ or telephone 01237 471972.
